Reclamation of the Shrub Areas:
The Palace Fields estate contains six shrub areas. These shrub areas have become very unsightly throughout the years since they were first planted over ten years ago. All shrubs within each area have become overgrown and very weedy with long grass, and had become visually unsightly, and made the over all estate visually very untidy.
One faithful Saturday morning armed with weapons such as spades, secateurs, and strimmer, we convened on the center shrub area with the full intention of completing all six shrub areas in one day. 5 hours later after sweat, prayres and tears we completed one shrub area, with 5 very exhausted volunteers.
It was decided to up the ante and to propose the hiring of a mini digger, Hynes Tool Hire Athenry Rd, Tuam. to complete the same exercise on the remaining shrub areas where we deemed necessary to reclaim. At the October 5th 2011 Palace Fields Residents Association meeting, it was proposed to use a mini digger to complete the remaining areas and the proposal was voted on and was passed.
On October 08th 2011, on a very cloud laiden rain threatening Saturday morning, we commenced operations complete with mini digger. With John at the levers all areas were completed by end of that day. Well done to all volunteers, John, Stephen, Michael, Ronan, and John, and craic was had by all. We are always looking for more volunteers, "many hands make light work" so come join us, everyone is welcome.
Next step is to choose colourful shrubs that will add visual vibrancy to the shrub areas of the estate, and to select those shrubs that are hardly enough to survive the typical winters that we have been experiencing of late i.e. down to -20'C.
Watch this space as we keep you updated on progress.
Note:
1. The minidigger was hired from Hynes Tool Hire, Athenry Rd. Tuam.
2. Emmet Murphy of Murphy's Garden centre, Tullybeg, Milltown Road, Tuam, Co. Galway. Tel: 093-60882, will be working with us to choose and plant the correct shrubs in the coming spring time.
